TUCSON, Ariz. - The Wake Forest men's golf team opens 2004 spring season this week at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event takes place at Arizona National Golf Course.
Fifteen teams are competing in the event, including 10 teams currently ranked among the nation's top 50. Wake Forest, ranked 16th, is the third-highest ranked team in this week's field. The Deacons will face a West Coast field in this tournament, as they are the only representatives east of the Mississippi. Wake Forest finished fifth out of 16 teams at this event a year ago.
Leading the Deacon contingent is senior Bill Haas, the nation's top-ranked player in the GolfWeek/Sagarin rankings. Haas enters the spring carrying over two impressive streaks from the fall season -- six consecutive rounds equal/under par and five straight rounds in the 60s. His stroke average after the fall was 68.55 and he's already won two events in the 2003-04 campaign.
Sophomore Kyle Reifers, currently ranked 59th nationally, will also represent the Deacs in Arizona. Junior Doug Manchester, sophomore Barr Blanton and freshman Chad Wilcox, a Peoria, Ariz. native, will also be competing for Wake Forest.
Teams will tee off at 8:00 a.m. using a shotgun start. The first two rounds take place Monday, with the final 18 on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatlive.com.
