GREENSBORO, N.C.-- The Wake Forest field hockey and women's soccer teams were among the recipients of the Fall Sportsmanship Award, the ACC announced Friday. Teams receiving the award have conducted themselves with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship, as determined by a vote of the league's teams. Wake Forest, Florida State and North Carolina each had two teams receive the award while Virginia had one.
The women's soccer team finished the season with a 10-7-3 record and earned its eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Demon Deacons played a difficult schedule in 2003, facing 14 opponents who were ranked at the time of the match or finished the regular season in the top-25.
The Wake Forest field hockey team captured its second consecutive national championship in 2003 and shares the sportsmanship award with North Carolina. Head Coach Jennifer Averill earned National Coach of the Year honors for the second straight season and senior Kelly Doton was the first Demon Deacon ever to receive the Honda Award and win National Player of the Year honors in the same year as winning a national title.
The ACC presents the sportsmanship award to one team in each of its 25 sports. The concept of these awards was created by the ACC Student Athlete Advisory Committee in an effort to recognize teams who earned the utmost regard from their peers during competition. As is stated in the conference's Mission Statement, "It [the ACC] strongly adheres to the principles of integrity and sportsmanship, and supports the total development of the student-athlete and each memeber institution's athletic department staff, with the intent of producing enlightened leadership for tomorrow."
