The Wake Forest women's tennis team will look to open a season 5-0 for just the fourth time in school history and first time since 1996 when the Demon Deacons face #23 Tennessee Saturday afternoon. First-serve is scheduled for noon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
The Deacs had little trouble in their first three victories over Charlotte (7-0), UNCG (7-0) and Penn State (5-2). Wake Forest then faced #57 Yale, but held off the Bulldogs, 4-3. The triumph marked the highest ranked foe the Demon Deacons had beaten since #47 Indiana on Feb. 2 of last season.
Wake Forest is led by junior Karin Coetzee. Coetzee, #15 in the most recent ITA rankings, has opened the spring season at 3-0. She has not dropped a single set in those three matches. Junior Katie Martzolf (94th), freshman Ashlee Davis, senior Aimee Smith, junior Danielle Schwartz and senior Liz Proctor all stand at 3-1 through their first four matches this spring.
In doubles action, the Demon Deacons have not dropped a match in their 12 matches so far this season. #20 Martzolf and Davis are 3-0, while #15 Coetzee and Smith are 1-0. The Deacs have used nine different teams in their 12 matches.
Tennessee currently owns a dual match record of 4-3. So far, all of UT's opponents have been ranked in the top-75, while five of the seven foes qualified for NCAA postseason play last year. At the NCAA Team Indoor Championships last week, the Lady Vols fell to No. 7 Washington in the first round, and then dropped a tough 4-3 decision to No. 14 William & Mary in consolation play. The Orange and White, however, got back on track with a 4-2 victory over No. 64 Wisconsin to close out the tourney.
The all-time series between Wake Forest and Tennessee is tied at 11 wins apiece. The Demon Deacons and Lady Vols have met at least once each season since 1988. Last year, Tennessee claimed a 5-0 triumph in Knoxville, while the Deacs captured two wins against the Lady Vols in 2002.
After Saturday's dual with Tennessee, the Deacs return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 against #24 Illinois. First-serve at Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center is set for noon.
