TODAY'S TOP STORIES
Deacons Open 2004 Season at Davidson...
Wake Forest begins its 95th season of baseball on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at Davidson. Right-handed Cypress Junior College transfer Justin Keadle (more on page two) will become the first Deacon newcomer since 1966 to be Wake Forest's Opening Day starter.
Familar Territory...
For the third time in 12 seasons, Wake Forest will open its regular season schedule at Davidson. In 2002, Nick Blue's two-run double in the third inning gave the Deacons a lead they would never relinquish. Later, Jamie D'Antona hit a grand slam and Kyle Sleeth struck out 10 in seven innings to give the Deacons a 7-2 victory. In 1993, Marc Palmieri gave up just one run through seven innings as Wake Forest won 6-2.
Greer Approaches 700 Career Wins...
As he begins his 17th season with the Demon Deacons, head coach George Greer stands only three wins away from his 700th career coaching victory at the Division I level and moving into fourth place on the ACC coaching wins chart.
Tuesday's opener at Davidson marks the Greer's annual return to Davidson, where he guided the Wildcats to 106 victories in six years (1982-87). Since arriving at Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons are 37-3 against Greer's former employer. Wake Forest hasn't lost to Davidson since a 1996 road game, a span of 15 contests including eight at Wildcat Park. The Demon Deacons lead the series 49-7 since 1960.
Today's Lucky Number Is...
