TODAY'S TOP STORIES
Opening Day: Take Two...
Because winter weather postponed Tuesday's game at Davidson, Wake Forest will now open its 95th season of baseball against 2003 NCAA champs Rice on Friday, Feb. 20 in Houston. Junior left-hander Tim Morley (more on page three) gets the call against the Owls at Reckling Park, where he made his collegiate debut in 2002 against New Mexico.
Deep in the Heart of Texas...
For the fourth time in seven seasons, Wake travels to Houston, Texas (more on page two). The Deacs have never defeated Rice in Houston, losing in 1998, 2001 and 2002. Wake Forest is 1-3 all-time against the Owls, picking up a win in 2000 in Orlando. The Deacons have never played Lamar or CS-Northridge. Wake is 5-4 all-time in Houston.
Opening Against the National Champions...
Friday's game will mark the fifth time in Wake Forest history the Deacons have opened against the defending national champs. In 2000, at the ACC-Disney Blast in Orlando, Wake Forest starter Scott Siemon struck out 10 Hurricane batters but Miami won, 6-3. In 1990, Georgia swept a three-game set from the Deacons in Athens, Ga.
Greer Approaches 700 Career Wins...
Wake Forest's 17th year coach George Greer stands only three wins away from his 700th career coaching victory at the Division I level and moving into fourth place on the ACC coaching wins chart.
Today's Number to Note is...
3 - The number of wins the Deacons recorded at Rice's Reckling Park during trips in '01 (UCF) and '02 (N. Mex., Nebraska).
