CLEMSON, S.C.-- The Wake Forest track and field team wrapped up its first day of competition on Friday at the 2004 ACC Indoor Championships at the Rock Norman Track and Field Complex in Clemson, S.C. The Demon Deacon women are in seventh place as a team while the men find themselves in the ninth position after day one.

Sophomores Lindsay Neuberger and Mike Loyd highlighted Wake Forest's day, setting NCAA provisional qualifying marks for the second consecutive week. Neuberger placed second in the shot put, breaking her own school record for the second week in a row with a distance of 51'-01.50" (15.58m). Loyd's time of 7.97 in the 60m hurdle preliminaries was the second-best mark in that event as he qualified for Saturday's finals. The sophomore from Winston-Salem also qualified for Saturday's 200m dash finals.

Also for the Demon Deacons on Friday, senior Nikeya Green qualified for Saturday's 800m finals by turning in a time of 2:12.98 which was the third best time out of 23 competitors. Senior Anne Bersagel also had a strong showing after competing in just one event this season prior to Friday's Championships. Bersagel ran a 16:48.76 in the 5,000m which placed her sixth and earned the Deacs three points in the overall standings. On the men's side, Nathan Sisco recorded his best mile time of the season (4:14.88) and Brad Wharton ran a 4:12.33 as both Deacs qualified for Saturday's finals.

For the first time ever, the pentathlon and heptathlon events were run at the ACC Championships on Friday. Wake Forest's Jamie Grayzer placed fifth overall in the pentathlon with Cassy Richards not far behind, in seventh place. Grayzer finished with 3438 points and Richards with 3282. The two combined to add six points to the Wake Forest women's team's overall score. After four events in the men's heptathlon, the Deacs' Luke Orman and Mike Piscetelli are in eighth and ninth place, respectively.

Day two of competition at the 2004 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships begins Saturday at 11 a.m.
