WEDNESDAY'S TOP STORIES
Deacons Continue Homestand Against Liberty...
After a 13-6 victory in Tuesday's home opener against Appalachian State, Wake Forest turns its attention to Liberty on Wednesday. The Demon Deacons send lefty Tim Morley to the mound for his second start of the year. Wednesday's game will be Liberty's season opener. Six-foot-five right hander Jason Jones, an 11-game winner in 2002, is slated to pitch for the Flames.
Deacons Vs. Liberty...
Wake Forest owns a 17-5-2 series lead against the Flames, but the teams have battled in bizarre contests in recent years. In 2003, the teams split their two meetings and each team won at home. The Deacons won 21-12 at Hooks Stadium while Liberty won 6-5 at Worthington Stadium. In Lynchburg in 2002, the teams ended up in an 11-11 tie due to rain and darkness. The last Liberty win in Winston-Salem was an 13-11 contest in 2001 that featured five home runs including one by then-freshman Steve LeFaivre.
I See Blue, He Looks Glorious!...
Wake Forest is averaging more than eight runs per contest. A big part of that is the return of fifth-year senior Nick Blue, the team's leadoff hitter. After missing 2003 with an shoulder injury, Blue is off to a red hot start, hitting .500 (8-for-16) with an on-base percentage of .579. Not only has Blue scored a team high five runs, but he has five RBI, second best on the team.
Greer Approaches 700 Career Wins...
After Tuesday's win over Appalachian State, Wake Forest's 17th year coach George Greer is only two wins away from his 700th career coaching victory at the Division I level and moving into fourth place on the ACC coaching wins chart.
Today's Number to Note is...
.515 - The combined batting average of Nick Blue and Ben Ingold through the team's first four games (17 of 33).
