Demon Deacons Roughed Up By Memphis, 15-3

MILLINGTON, TN-- Memphis exploded for 15 runs on 17 hits and held Wake Forest scoreless over the final seven innings to defeat the Demon Deacons, 15-3 Saturday afternoon in the Easton USA Challenge at USA Baseball Stadium in Millington, Tennessee. The 15 runs scored by the Tigers is the most given up by Wake Forest this season as the Deacs fall to 8-7 and Memphis improves to 10-2.
Memphis starting pitcher Derek Hankins gave up just three runs on four hits in seven innings and improved his record to 2-1. Demon Deacon starter Kyle Young was chased from the game after allowing eight runs in just four innings pitched and suffered his first loss of the season.
Wake Forest wasted no time taking the lead, scoring three runs off of Memphis starter Derek Hankins in the top of the first inning. After leadoff batter Nick Blue drew a walk, freshman Matt Antonelli lined a single into right-center field. The Deacs' top hitter, Ben Ingold followed with a line drive home run over the left field wall. This was Ingold's first homer of the season and fourth of his career.
The Tigers responded with three runs of their own in the top of the second. Patrick Hope walked on four pitches to start the inning and came around two batters later on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Michael Lewis. With one on and one out, Memphis shortstop Brent Dlugach ripped his first home run of the season, a two-run shot deep over the left field wall.
Memphis touched up Young for five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Kyle Scott led off the inning with his second hit of the game, a double to the left field wall, and came around to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead when leadoff batter Chad House reached on an RBI infield single. After a single by right fielder Jordan Hart, the bases were loaded for Memphis' Josh Payne who launched a grand slam home run into the left field netting, extending his team's lead to five runs at 8-3.
The Tigers would add seven more runs over the final four innings, including a five-run seventh where they sent ten batters to the plate. Memphis pitchers held the Deacs to just three hits after the first inning and the game was called after eight innings due to the ten-run rule which can is put into effect for tournament games.
The Deacs wrap up their weekend at the Easton USA Challenge with a 12 pm matchup against Indiana State on Sunday.
