CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.-- The 46th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team dropped a close, 4-3 decision to #16 Virginia Saturday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville. The Deacons are now 7-6 on the season and 0-2 in the ACC while the Cavaliers improve to 14-1, 4-0 in the ACC.
Virginia came on strong in the beginning, taking the doubles point and grabbing an early lead. 17th-ranked Rylan Rizza and Nick Meythaler handled Wake Forest's Brett Ross and Andrew Hamar, 8-3 at No. 1 while Doug Stewart and Darrin Cohen took an 8-6 victory over David Loewenthal and Andrew Simpson at No. 2. Todd Paul and Derrick Spice rebounded for an 8-4 victory for the Deacs at No. 3.
The Deacons and Cavs split the six singles matches on the day. Wake Forest's Spice (No. 1), David Loewenthal (No. 3) and Andrew Hamar (No. 5) all came out on top, but Todd Paul (No. 2), Brett Ross (No. 4) and Andrew Simpson (No. 6) were defeated as Virginia held on to remain undefeated in conference play.
The Demon Deacons will return to action Sunday when they travel to Maryland for an 11 a.m. matchup with the Terrapins.
