Rock Hill, S.C. - The Wake Forest baseball team split a doubleheader at Winthrop on Sunday, losing the first game 3-1 and taking the nightcap, 4-2.
The first game snapped Wake Forest's six game winning streak. The Demon Deacons are now 7-4 while the Eagles now stand at 6-5. Sophomore Kyle Young was outstanding in game two, going seven innings for the victory. He improved to 2-0 by allowing just one earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Lee Land worked the eighth and the ninth innings with three strikeouts to earn his second save.
Young has allowed just two earned runs through 18 innings, spanning three starts. Land has not yielding an earned run in his first five collegiate appearances.
Mike Honce started for Winthrop and was credited with the loss to slip to 1-1.
Ryder Mathias and Brad Scioletti each had three hits over the course of the two games.
In the third inning and the score tied at one, Brad Scioletti doubled into the left-center gap to score Nick Blue, giving the Deacons a 2-1 lead in the third. The Deacons would not relinquish the lead.
Wake Forest scored two more in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Matt Miller's RBI triple drove in Doug Riepe, then Miller scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles got on the board first courtesy of an unearned run. Wake Forest tied the game in the second inning when Ryder Mathias scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Miller. He advanced to third base on a textbook sacrifice bunt by Riepe.
In the first game of the twinbill, Wake Forest saw its six-game winning streak snapped in a 3-1 loss. The Deacons stranded 11 runners on base and couldn't lend enough run support to Justin Keadle (0-2). The Deacon starter threw a complete game with seven strikeouts.
Wake Forest had the tying runs in scoring position in the ninth inning for the team's hottest hitter, Ben Ingold. But he grounded out to shortstop on a bang-bang play at first to end the game and Ingold's 19-game hitting streak.
Kevin Slowey (1-2) got the win for Winthrop. He pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Chris Leroux earned his second save.
The Deacons continue their Spring Break road swing on Tuesday at Liberty. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
