Murrells Inlet, S.C. - After sitting in second place with an opening round 297, the Wake Forest men's golf team slipped to a seventh-place finish at the General Jim Hackler Invitational following the final 36 holes on Tuesday. The 54-hole event, featuring 18 teams, took place at TPC of Myrtle Beach and was hosted by Coastal Carolina University.
WFU finished tied for seventh with Kansas State University at 32-over par 896. No team finished under par, as Pepperdine won the event with a six-over 870.
The second round of play began Monday afternoon, but was suspended due to darkness and teams picked up where they left off Tuesday morning. The Deacs struggled in the second round, shooting a 17-over 305 -- its highest round of the season and just the second round this year above 300. Wake recovered to shoot a six-over 294 over the final 18.
Deacon sophomore Kyle Reifers was WFU's top finisher, tying for seventh with a four-over 220 with scores of 75-73-72. It is his third straight and fifth overall top 10 finish. Freshman Chad Wilcox, a last-minute entry into the lineup, posted a career-best 13th with a five-over 221. He carded the Deacs' lowest score of the day with a two-under 70 in the final round.
With a two-under 70 in Monday's opening round, senior Bill Haas tied his own school record with his 13th consecutive round under par. The streak ended on Tuesday, however, as Haas shot a season-high 79 in the second round. He rebounded with a one-over 73 on the final 18 to finish tied for 17th overall at six-over 222.
Junior Doug Manchester turned in a career-best 236 with rounds of 78-79-79. He tied for 69th overall. Freshman Sean Moore struggled for much of the tournament, finishing 86th with a 240 (83-76-81).
