LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest baseball team fell to Liberty 13-8 on Tuesday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. The Deacons slipped to 7-5 overall and 1-4 in games away from Hooks Stadium.
Ben Ingold, the ACC's leading hitter, had three hits and two RBI for Wake Forest. Ryder Mathias had two hits and drove in three runs.
The Deacons jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the first, courtesy of RBI singles by Ingold and Steve LeFaivre.
Liberty responded immediately with two unearned runs in the first inning to tie the game. Then, in the third the Flames added three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Liberty and Wake Forest trade single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Deacons trailed 8-4 entering the seventh inning but a three-run frame, highlighted by a two-run single by Mathias, pulled Wake Forest within a run at 8-7.
But Wake Forest's bullpen couldn't hold the Flames in check, allowing a five-run seventh.
Liberty's Worthington Stadium has been a house of horrors in recent seasons for the Demon Deacons. Since 2000, Wake Forest has come away with one win in five trips to Lynchburg including one tie.
One bright spot for the Deacons was the return of reliever Danny Mackey. The redshirt junior from Rochester, N.Y., missed each of the last two seasons with injury. He struck out two batters in the eighth inning.
Wake Forest's Spring Break road trip continues this week as the Deacons travel to Millington, Tenn. Wake Forest will play four games in four days beginning Thursday against UT-Martin. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
