Baseball Drops One To Duke, 8-7

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke Blue Devils scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win their second consecutive one-run game as they defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 8-7, on Saturday evening at Jack Coombs Field. Sophomore Javier Socorro went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored as he extended his career-long hitting streak to 11 games.
Freshman Billy Muldowney (1-1) picked up the win after allowing two runs in the final 2.1 innings. Daniel Davidson (0-1) took the loss after giving up one unearned run in 2.0 innings.
Duke took an early lead with a four-run second inning. Sophomore Mike Miello led off with a single and advanced to third on a ground-rule double to left-center by junior Bryan Smith. Sophomore Brian Hernandez gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead when his infield single sent Miello home. With one out, freshman Kyle Silver doubled to left-center, plating Smith. Freshman Jonathan Anderson's bunt single scored Hernandez and when Anderson was caught stealing in a run-down, Silver crossed the plate with Duke's fourth run of the inning.
The Blue Devils added a run in the fourth when Hernandez reached on an infield single, advanced to second on an error and later scored on a double play.
Wake Forest snapped a streak of 13 consecutive scoreless innings with a two-run sixth inning. Steve LeFaivre led off the inning with a home run over the right field scoreboard, his second homer of the weekend and his seventh home run of the year. Brad Scioletti followed with a single to right. Matt Miller reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a single through the left side by Nick Blue to make it a 5-2 game.
The Demon Deacons evened the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh. Wake Forest sent nine batters to the plate and scored three runs on three hits, two walks and one Blue Devil error. Ryder Mathias' double down the left-field line highlighted the inning for the Deacons.
Duke answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Anderson drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a Socorro single. Both Anderson and Socorro advanced on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Adam Murray and scored on a double to center by junior Tim Layden.
Wake again knotted the game at 7-7 in the top of the eighth on LeFaivre's second home run of the day, third of the weekend and fourth career jack against Duke, a two-run shot over the scoreboard in right field.
The Blue Devils pulled out their second consecutive one-run win with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Socorro led off with his second double of the day and scored on a sacrifice fly by Miello.
Duke improved to 17-18 overall and 5-6 in the ACC. Wake Forest, which dropped its 12th consecutive game, fell to 11-20 and 1-10 in the ACC.
The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons will conclude their three-game series with a game at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Jack Coombs Field.
