WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 31st-ranked Wake Forest women's tennis team will look to avenge one of its worst performances of the regular season Friday evening when the sixth-seeded Demon Deacons open the 2004 ACC Championship against third-seeded Florida State. First-serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.

The Deacs (11-10, 3-5 ACC) closed the regular season with a dissapointing 4-3 loss to Maryland on Senior Day at Leighton Tennis Stadium this past Sunday afternoon. The Seminoles (16-6, 6-2 ACC) closed out their regular season way back on April 4 with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to eventual ACC Regular Season Champion Clemson. Florida State tied its school record for most conference wins in the program's ten year history.

Wake Forest -- who recorded only three regular season victories in 2003 -- posted eight more in 2004. The Demon Deacons and Seminoles faced off back on March 21. Florida State came out on top 6-1, but the Deacs played without their top singles player, junior Karin Coetzee. Coetzee, who is ranked 26th in the most recent ITA poll, finished the 2003-04 regular season with a 26-10 mark, including 11-7 this spring. The Bloemfontein, South Africa native, who will play at the No. 1 position this weekend, went 8-7 in the top singles position.

Fellow seniors Liz Proctor and Aimee Smith each finished the 2003-04 regular season with 19 wins apiece -- single-season career-highs for each. Proctor went 19-14, including 11-10 this spring, while Smith finished up 19-16 and 8-12 in dual action. Proctor and Smith each played much of this season at No. 4 and No. 5. Proctor went 6-5 at No. 4, while Smith went 3-5 at No. 4.

Freshman Ashlee Davis will fill the spot at No. 2 singles. The Anderson, Ind.native went 18-13 this past season, including 10-9 in the spring. Davis, ranked 70th in the most recent ITA poll, also filled in at the top singles spot and went 2-2 with victories over two players ranked among the nation's top-30.

Junior Katie Martzolf will play at the third singles spot. Martzolf battled some nagging injuries throughout much of the season, but still managed to post a 15-13 record. The Indianapolis, Ind. native went 9-10 this spring and 4-6 at No. 3. Martzolf also played nine matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and won five of those matches.

Junior Danielle Schwartz will fill the sixth and final singles position. Schwartz finished 16-13 this past regular season and 10-10 in the spring season. The Livingston, N.J. native went 5-3 at No. 5 this season and 3-3 at No. 6.

Wake Forest will field the following teams in doubles. Martzolf and Davis will compete at No. 1 doubles, while Schwartz and Smith will play at No. 2 and Coetzee and Proctor will play at No. 3.
