The 38th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team heads to the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday for the 2004 ACC Championship. The Demon Deacons finished the regular season with an 11-9 overall record and 3-5 mark in the ACC, earning the tournament's sixth-seed. Wake Forest will be facing the third-seeded and sixth-ranked Duke Blue Devils beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
Duke finished the 2004 season 18-6 overall with a 6-2 record in conference matches. The Deacons and Blue Devils squared off March 24 in Winston-Salem with Duke coming out on top, 6-1. The Deacs have not defeated the Blue Devils since the 1999 season and are just 8-35 all-time against their opponent from Durham. Wake Forest is coming off a 4-3 win over NC State last Saturday while Duke fell to #15 Virginia by a score of 4-3 Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville.
The Deacons have been led by freshman Todd Paul who has compiled a 28-10 overall singles record in his first year as a Demon Deacon. Paul leads the Deacs with 15 dual match singles victories, including a 5-3 record in ACC play. The Stamford, Conn. native will compete in the No. 2 singles slot Friday and will also pair up with senior Andrew Simpson at No. 3 doubles where they went 2-0 in ACC matches this season.
Also contributing strong play for the Demon Deacons in 2004 was junior Derrick Spice who filled the No. 1 singles position all year long. The North Olmsted, Ohio native has a 16-15 overall singles record, including eight wins at No. 1. Spice will also play No. 1 doubles with partner Brett Ross Friday against Duke. The pairing has been Wake Forest's top doubles team all year, compiling a 22-9 overall mark. Ross racked up five ACC singles victories this year, and ranks second on the team behind Paul with 23 overall singles wins.
In the No. 3 singles position Friday for the Deacs will be senior David Loewenthal who led the team with a 6-2 record in ACC matches. Loewenthal has 101 career singles victories which ranks second all-time at Wake Forest behind David Bere. The Franklin Lakes, NJ native will also play No. 2 doubles along with Andrew Hamar.
