RALEIGH, N.C.-- The sixth-seeded Wake Forest men's tennis team fell by a score of 4-1 to third-seeded and sixth-ranked Duke Friday evening in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championships at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh. The Blue Devils improve to 19-6 while the Demon Deacons fall to 11-10 after their second loss this season to Duke. The Blue Devils also took a 6-1 victory over Wake on March 24 in Winston-Salem.
The Blue Devils wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. At No. 2, Jason Zimmerman and Stephen Amritraj cruised to an 8-1 victory over Wake Forest's Andrew Hamar and David Loewenthal. Ludovic Walter and Peter Rodrigues also pulled out an 8-5 win against Andrew Simpson and Todd Paul at No. 3, grabbing an early advantage.
Just as in the March 24 match between these two teams, the Demon Deacons were only able to secure one singles victory. Hamar took the first set from Jonathan Stokke, 6-2 and led 3-0 in the second set before Stokke was forced to retire with an injury. The Blue Devils' Walter outlasted Paul in a three-set match at No. 2, Zimmerman won a three-set decision over Loewenthal at No. 3, and Rodrigues eased past Brett Ross, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 4 slot.
The ACC Men's Tennis Championship semifinals will be played on Saturday with the championship match taking place Sunday morning. For complete results, visit www.theacc.com.
