Clemmons, N.C. - With a 54-hole total of 838, Duke captured its ninth consecutive ACC title at the 2004 ACC Championship by finishing 14-under par. The three-day event was held at the par 71, 6348-yard course at Salem Glen Golf and Country Club.
Duke, who won their 12th ACC Championship in the tournament's 16 year history, defeated second place Wake Forest (857) by 19 strokes. North Carolina was third at 861, followed by NC State (884) and Florida State in fifth at 887. Maryland finished in sixth with 904 strokes while Virginia was seventh with 915 strokes.
The Demon Deacons broke numerous team records with their performance during the three day event. The 54-hole score of 857 was the lowest ever, eclipsing the mark set at the 2002 NCAA East Regional by 18 strokes. Even though the course was par 71, the finish was still the best relative to par. In the 2002 NCAA East Regional Wake Forest was 11-over par. However, the 857 stroke tournament score was only five-over par.
The Demon Deacons also set records with the final round score of 275, which was nine-under par. The round was the lowest round in school history the third round under par in the history of the women's golf program at Wake Forest.
Duke freshman Brittany Lang (67-69-68 = 204) captured medalist honors by two shots over Meaghan Francella (66-69-71= 206) of North Carolina. Finishing third was Ashley Prange (69-71-67 = 207) of North Carolina. The low round of the final day belonged to Liz Janangelo, who shot a 5-under 66.
Wake Forest had three ladies shoot 68, which is three-under par. Ashley Hoagland was one of the three, and she finished with a final score of 214 (+1) to finish tied for seventh. The second was Jessica Castle, who shot six-over (219) for the tournament and finished in 14th place. Mandy Goins was the final player to finish with a three under for the day. Her three day total of 227 moved her into a tie for 24th position.
Christine Hallstrom continued her consistent play by shooting a final round 71 (E) as she did the previous two days. For the event, Hallstrom carded a 213, which placed her in a tie for 5th place. Senior Deb Means finished tied for 11th after a round of even par. She was four-over for the three-day event.
The Demon Deacons will have a couple weeks off before they head to Howey-in-the-Hills Florida to play in the NCAA East Regional, which will begin May 6 and end on May 8.
