AUGUSTA, Ga. - The 21st-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team is in second place nearing the completion of the second round of the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole event is taking place at Forest Hills Golf Club on its par 72, 7,231-yard layout. Eighteen teams are participating.
The Demon Deacons shot a one-under 288 as a team during Saturday's opening round, good enough for a fourth place tie with Georgia. Wake then moved up to second place in the standings with three of its five players in the clubhouse before the second round was suspended due to darkness. UCLA, which led after the first round with an opening 282, remains in first, six strokes ahead of the Deacs. Both teams, however, were sitting at one-under in the second round before play was called.
Duke is currently in third, one stroke back of WFU at even par, Minnesota is fourth at +1, and host Augusta State and NC State are tied for fifth at two-over.
Wake's Bill Haas is currently in a tie for first place in the individual standings. Haas fired a field-low 67 (-5) in Saturday's first round, including four birdies on the front nine, to have sole possession of first place. But UCLA's Steve Conway is four-under through 17 holes in the second round while Haas is one-under through 15 to produce a current tie at the top. In his second round, Haas had two early bogeys but got it back to even at the turn. His three consecutive birdies on holes 11, 12 and 13 were sandwiched between bogeys on 10 and 14 to bring him back to one-under.
Sophomore Kyle Reifers, one of three Deacs to finish the second round, is currently in 15th place at one-under 143 (72-71). Reifers found himself at four-over through seven holes in Saturday's second round, but rebounded with six birdies over the last 11 holes, including Nos. 17 and 18, to finish at one-under and move into the top 20.
Freshman Chad Wilcox has yet to play No. 1, his final hole of the second round, but currently sits at one-over for the round. Combined with his opening-round 72, Wilcox is tied for 29th for the time being. He recorded WFU's only eagle of the day, on the 541-yard hole No. 9 in his first round.
Freshman Sean Moore and senior Buck Williams were both able to complete their second round, and both lowered their scores after struggling on the opening 18. Moore is tied for 52nd with a five-over 149. He shot an even 72 after a 77 in the morning round. Williams shaved six strokes, going from a 79 to a 73, and is currently tied for 73rd at 152 (+8).
Players will complete the second round at 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Teams will then be re-paired and tee off at holes No. 1 and 10 for the final round of the tournament. Full results and live scoring are available at www.golfstat.com.
