Deacons Resume ACC Schedule at Conference Leading Virginia...
Wake Forest returns to conference action this weekend against Virginia in Charlottesville beginning Thursday night. The Demon Deacons haven't played a conference series since April 23-25 when Wake Forest scored 42 runs en route to a series victory.
The Deacons have won eight of the last nine contests at Davenport Field and haven't dropped a series in Charlottesville since 1996.
Last year, however, the Cavaliers took two of three from the Deacons at Hooks Stadium and ended Wake Forest's season in the ACC Tournament with a bizarre 12-11, 10-inning game (see page 2).
Blue Continues Climb on Wake Forest Stolen Base Chart...
With 16 stolen bases this year, fifth year senior Nick Blue has upped his career total to 56 to rank fifth all time in the Wake Forest record book. On Tuesday, Blue appeared to steal second base against Elon. However, because it was an eight-run game in the ninth inning, the official ruling was "defensive indifference," not a stolen base.
If and when Blue gets three more bags, he will move into third place. The school record holder is Tommy Gregg who swiped 100 bases from 1982-85 before playing 11 years in the major leagues.
Today's Numbers to Note is... .450 - Deacon pinch hitters are 9-for-20 with two home runs and nine RBI this season led by Doug Riepe's 5-for-9 mark.
Flashback: May 23, 2003 * ACC Tournament * Salem (Va.) Memorial Stadium...
Wake Forest and Virginia engaged in easily one of the most bizarre and dramatic games in ACC Tournament history last May in Salem, Va. The Cavaliers won 12-11 on a 10th inning walkoff homer by Joe Koshansky, but the route to the finish featured many twists and turns.
The Deacons jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run double by Jamie D'Antona and a towering three-run blast by Steve LeFaivre that chased Cavalier starter Chris Gale. Virginia battled back with three runs in the first inning. The 'Hoos eventually tied the game at seven in the fifth inning and took the lead with two more runs in the seventh.
Down two runs, the Deacons were down to their final strike in the ninth inning, but had the bases loaded for senior Ryan Hubbard. On a 1-2 count, Hubbard's line drive barely made it over the right field wall for a grand slam off Canon Hickman, his fourth homer of the year, to give Wake Forest an 11-9 lead.
But in the bottom of the ninth, with Virginia down to its final strike, Matt Dunn's two-run single squeezed through the middle, tying the game at 11. In the 10th, the Deacons left runners on the corners. Leading off the bottom of the tenth, Koshansky fouled off several 2-2 pitches before lining over the right field wall to end the game, and Wake Forest's season.
The game lasted three hours and 33 minutes and saw 34 players from both teams including 11 pitchers, 23 runs, 26 hits, seven errors (six by Virginia), 22 runners stranded, three ties and four lead changes.
