Winston-Salem, N.C. - 22nd-ranked Florida State defeated Wake Forest 27-3 on Friday afternoon at Hooks Stadium to capture the weekend series, handing the Deacons their seventh straight loss.
The game started off poorly for Wake Forest as the Deacons gave up two first inning runs on just one hit with two errors, a passed ball and a hit batsman.
Florida State scored one run in the second inning, and began to pour it on in the third inning with a nine-run frame off starter Kyle Young, who took the loss to fall to 4-6 on the season. In the third inning, the Seminoles sent 16 batters to the plate. Just two of Florida State's seven base hits were of the extra base variety, and both were hit by Seminole first baseman Ryne Malone.
Florida State added three runs in the fourth on back-to-back home runs by Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Malone. Deacon reliever Sean Souders then retired the Seminoles in order in the fifth, and Wake Forest took the opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning.
Ben Ingold's two-out double into right-center field scored Matt Miller. It was Ingold's team-leading 14th double of the year and gave the junior shortstop 43 RBI, to tie for the team lead with Steve LeFaivre.
Any momentum would be short-lived as the Seminole bats wouldn't be silenced in the sixth. Martinez-Esteve hit his second home run of the game, this time a three-run shot. Later in the inning, Seminole third baseman Dennis Anderson recorded a two-run shot as Florida State batted around for the second time.
Florida State added five more runs in the eighth as Brent Peacher and Kevin Lynch hit back-to-back. The three-run blast was Peacher's third of the year. For Lynch, the Seminole closer, it was his first career home run.
The biggest highlight for the Deacons came in the ninth when catcher Steven Malinowski made his pitching debut. The sophomore from Kensington, Conn., came out throwing strikes as his first ten pitches were in there. He allowed a double and a walk but struck out the final batter of the game.
Wake Forest scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on RBIs by Matt Miller and Brian Shust. Brad Scioletti was the offensive star for the Deacons going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Eddie Cannon earned the victory to improve to 8-4 on the year. He allowed one run through six innings of work with four strikeouts and one walk.
Florida State's 27 runs were the second most runs scored by a Deacon opponent in school history. The 24-run margin was the worst loss in the history of Wake Forest baseball.
Before Saturday's regular season finale at 1:30 p.m., the Deacons will honor their four seniors, Nick Blue, Steve LeFaivre, Doug Riepe and Brad Scioletti.
