Winston-Salem, NC - Several Wake Forest alumni recently competed in the Olympic Trials in Sacramento, California. Among the group were Andy Bloom, Nikeya Green and Chris Estwanik.
Former Olympian and NCAA Champion Andy Bloom competed in the discus. He threw 56.82m in the qualifying round, missing the cut for the finals by less than one half of a meter.
2004 graduate and All-American Nikeya Green, placed fifth in her heat in the first round of the 800m race, with a time of 2:05.77. She missed qualifying for the finals by just less than one second.
Chris Estwanik, a 2002 graduate of Wake Forest, competed in the 1500m. Estwanik placed third in his heat in the quarterfinals, with a time of 3:41.99. In semifinal action, he posted a 3:40.32, qualifying for the finals. He placed ninth in the finals after running a 3:43.04, just short of qualifying for the Olympic Team. "Chris had an outstanding meet," said Wake Forest Head Track Coach Annie Bennett. "He has had a very good year during the 2004 indoor and outdoor seasons, setting personal records in the 3000m and 1500m".
1998 track & field alumnus Hunter Kemper will be on the United States Olympic Triathlon Team. Bennett gives Kemper, who is currently ranked No.5 in the world, "a good shot at a medal".
