Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team held Denver to just three shots and no corners, en route to a 2-0 victory, in the final game of the Wake Forest/adidas Women's Soccer Classic. Junior Sarah Kozey led the Deacs with the gamewinning goal, her sixth tally of the season, while freshman Nichole Lecznar and Kristina Hanley were both selected to the all-tournament team.
The first half of the game was tough for the Deacs with numerous opportunities in front of the net, none of which seemed to make it past Danielle Wiley, the Pioneer keeper. Kozey had three attempts, two of which were just wide of the cage, while Elizabeth Remy also put up three shots in the first, all of which resulted in saves.
The Deacs opened the second half, gaining possession right away with Remy driving toward the goal and sending one wide. A foul on Wake and then another on Denver created a free kick just outside the box for the Deacs, which in turn left senior Alli Hunt with a shot. As the Deacs continued to drive, freshman Maggie Horne took a shot, which was saved and rebounded by the defense, who attempted to clear it. Kozey blocked the clear and controlled the ball, only to fire it past the keeper, putting the Deacs on the board in the 56th minute.
During the remainder of the half, the Deacs found nine more shots on goal, until less than a minute into her collegiate debut, freshman Katie Kokkinos gained possession just outside the Pioneer box and took a solid shot that sailed over the keepers head and solidified the Deacons lead in the 84th minute.
As a team, Wake Forest held Denver to just three shots, all of which were taken in the first period. Kozey led the Deacs with seven shots, while junior Melanie Schneider posted six and Remy five. In the cage, Heather Currie recorded her first collegiate shutout after only making one save in 90 minutes of action. For Denver, Wiley posted 15 saves, of of the Deacs 32 attempts.
The win against the Pioneers moves Wake Forest to 4-1-1 overall, while Denver falls to 2-4. The Demon Deacons will return to action Friday night, to host Davidson at 5 p.m.
