Wake Forest Finishes Strong at St. Mary's Classic

Knoxville, Tenn. - Wake Forest Senior Karin Coetzee captured the Flight One singles title over the weekend at the 2004 St. Mary's Fall Tennis Classic. Coetzee cruised into the semi-finals Friday with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Furman's Mary Neill Hagood. On day two of play, Coetzee recorded a straight set victory (6-2, 6-1) over Middle Tennessee's Jennifer Klaschka. Coetzee capped off a stellar weekend with a win over 39th ranked Sabita Maharaj of Tennessee 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 for the championship.
Also in Flight One singles play, Ashlee Davis reached the semi-finals on day two before falling 6-3, 6-3 to Maharaj of Tennessee.
In Flight Three singles, Senior Katie Martzolf did not drop a set the entire weekend and captured the championship with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Tennessee's Blakeley Griffith.
Jenna Loeb of Wake Forest fell just short of her bid for the Flight Four singles title with a close loss in the championship match on Sunday 7-5, 6-2 to Tennessee's Melissa Shaub.
In Flight Five singles, Blakely Offutt dropped a tough match on the first day of play to Julia Roach of N.C. State.
In doubles play, the team of Coetzee and Davis reached the finals of Flight One doubles, but fell just short of the championship with an 8-4 loss to Maharaj/Robards of Tennessee. Wake Forest's team of Martzolf/Loeb reached the semi-finals of Flight Two doubles play before losing to Zuccarini/Beier of Purdue.
Wake Forest returns to action next weekend with their annual Demon Deacon Classic October 1-3.
