Wake Forest Volleyball Tops Connecticut To Win Demon Deacon Invitational

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's volleyball team wrapped up the weekend with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-19, 30-25) victory over Connecticut, securing first place at the 2004 Demon Deacon Invitational. Senior Morgan Havig, who posted seven solo blocks and 10 block assists, was named the tournament MVP, while Kim Stern was named to the all-tournament squad. Against Connecticut, the Deacs came out strong in game one, putting up 17 kills to the Huskies 13. Pulling out to an early lead, the Deacs led the entire way, taking the first game, 30-21. In the second, it was much of the same, with Wake Forest pulling ahead on a 10-4 run, highlighted with two strong kills by Christy Williams. As the second game progressed, the Deacs continued to dominate and took the game with the largest margin of victory so far this season (30-19). In the third and final game, the Deacs again opened up with another 10-4 run, this time highlighted by five assists from junior Erin Borhart. Against Connecticut, Borhart posted a match-high 27 assists and 12 digs for her second double-double of the day. Earlier, against Marshall, she put up 49 assists and 11 digs. As a team, Wake fared well, out-hitting UConn .320 to .109. For the Huskies, Katy Craig posted 10 kills and Jenny Neelands found 11 digs. Jamie Hadenfeldt also posted 10 kills for Connecticut, earning her a spot on the all-tournament squad. Rounding out the Demon Deacon Invitational All-Tournament squad is: Lynae Vonder Hull (South Carolina), Shonda Cole (South Carolina) and Kelly Anne Billingly (Marshall). Wake Forest is now 3-0 on the season and will return to the court at the Tennessee Tournament, in Knoxville, Tenn., on Friday, Sept. 10.
