Track And Field Teams Wrap Up First Meet Of Season

Blacksburg, Va. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams concluded action in the first meet of the indoor season Saturday night at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Seven men, one woman and the male 4x400m relay team combined for eleven top-10 finishes in Blacksburg over the two day meet.
Junior Molly Nunn and newcomer Merry Placer placed in the top-20 in the 1-mile run, with times of 5:12.03 and 5:21.05 respectively. Dianne Anderson and Michelle Duffey also enjoyed top-20 success in the 500 meter race, with marks of 1:18.86 and 1:21.43.
Melissa Council posted a 14th place finish in the 60 meter hurdles, with a time of 9.17. Freshman Molly Kennedy placed seventh in the high jump, reaching a height of 1.55 meters.
In other field events, Jill Ahrens pole vaulted a 3.05 meters 14th-place performance while Catherine Muehleib and Kennedy competed in the shot put, with marks of 11.89 meters and 10.13 meters respectively.
The men's 4 x 400 meter relay placed sixth overall, with a time of 3:15.51. The relay team of Seely, Aaron Russell, Willie Idlette and Michael Bingham established a new school relay record with that mark. In the 300 meter dash, speedsters Michael Bingham, Willie Idlette and Mike Loyd finished third, sixth and seventh, with times of 34.70, 34.98 and 35.14 in that order.
Eric Seely ran a 1:04.74 en route to a third place finish in the 500 meter run. Seely's time marked a new Wake Forest indoor track record.Aaron Russell joined Seely in the top-10 of that race, with a time of 1:06.14. Loyd finished third in the preliminaries (8.09), the semifinals (8.05) and in the finals (8.01) of the 60 meter hurdles.
Adam Gabrault threw the weight 16.87 meters for a sixth place finish, while Seth Yetter jumped to 1.95 meters in the high jump, good for a fourth place spot. In the long jump, Bingham came in ninth after a 7.07 meter performance.
The Deacons return to action this weekend in Johnson City, Tenn. at East Tennessee State's Niswonger Invitational. Events will take place Friday, Jan. 21 through Saturday, Jan. 22.
