WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest University baseball team opened preseason practice on Friday as preparation resumes for the 2005 college baseball season.
After two weeks of individual drills and weightlifting, the Demon Deacons will resume team drills and scrimmage each of the next three weekends in preparation for the season.
The Demon Deacons also opened a new chapter in its storied history of college baseball with Rembielak, pitching coach Chris Sinacori, assistant coach and former Deacon standout Jon Palmieri and volunteer assistant coach Marshall Canosa all going through their first official practice with the Demon Deacons.
Rembielak, the winningest coach in any sport in Kent State University history, recorded a 373-251-1 (.597) record in 11 years with the Golden Flashes. Rembielak hopes to bring the same success he had at Kent State to the Demon Deacon program.
The challenge is daunting. Wake Forest struggled in 2004, finishing 17-33 overall and 4-20 in the ACC, but with the return of six starting position players, including All-ACC second team selection Ben Ingold, and three of their top four pitchers from a year ago the expectations are far higher in 2005.
The normal practice time will be 2:15 p.m. each day and all practices are open to the public. The Demon Deacons are expected to hold their first intra-squad game of the preseason next week.
Wake Forest opens the season at the Coca-Cola Classic in Rock Hill, S.C. The Deacs will face Winthrop on Thursday, Feb. 10, then Western Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 12 before closing the weekend with the host Eagles again on Sunday, Feb. 13.
