Winston-Salem, N.C. - Redshirt freshman Jessica Furlong earned her second double-double in as many matches and three others hit in double figures as the Wake Forest volleyball team defeated Georgia Tech, 3-1 (30-20, 28-30, 30-21, 30-25), Saturday evening in Reynolds Gym. The win over the Yellow Jackets improves the Demon Deacons season-long winning streak to five matches.
"I am extremely proud of my team and the way they played tonight," head coach Heather Kahl said. "I told them before we started that if they believed in each other and they believed in themselves, the we would walk away with a win."
Furlong, who slammed down 17 kills and 14 digs, led the team at the net for the second night in a row. Junior Lauren Peterson had the match-high attack percentage of .417 with 13 kills off 24 attempts and three errors. Freshman Natalie Mullikin also was in double figures with 12 kills, but it was her six block assists and four solo blocks that made her stand out. Freshman Shannan Homan also shined at the net with six block assists.
Wake Forest didn't take the lead in the first game until a 7-2 run at 13-12. Strong attacking at the net and eight kills by Furlong kept the Deacs ahead and they took the first game, 30-20. In game two, the score was tied 16 times and the lead changed hands eight times, but a kill by Georgia Tech's Callie Miller and then a block solo by Talisa Kellog at 28 all gave the Jackets the game.
In the third game the two teams stayed close to each other tying the score five times. At the 11 all mark, Wake Forest took control with a 5-1 run. Despite a 4-1 run at 21-16, Georgia Tech could not catch up and the Deacs took the third game, 30-21.
Georgia Tech jumped out to a 10-2 lead in game four but were caught sleeping on the Deacs as Wake Forest fought back and brought the score within three with a 9-3 run. Knotting it up at 15 all and then again at 17 all, Wake took the lead with four straight points. Holding onto it from there, Wake Forest closed out the game and the match, 30-25.
The Demon Deacons, who improve to 13-9 overall and 6-7 in the conference, will next face NC State and North Carolina, Nov. 4 and 6, respectively. Both games are on the road.
