Tulsa, Okla. - Wake Forest senior men's tennis player Brett Ross upset 49th-ranked Tomas Bohunicky of Oklahoma State, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the second round of qualifying at the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on Monday.
Teammate Andrew Hamar also won his first round match, a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Martin Stiegwardt of Georgia State.
Ross and Hamar need two wins each to advance to the main draw. Their quest continues on Tuesday. At 8:00 a.m., Ross is scheduled to play a familiar foe, Virginia's Treat Huey. They met three times last year and Huey won two of three matches. Ross' win came in the qualifying rounds of last year's ITA Championships.
In the second round, Hamar, the 70th-ranked player in the nation, faces Old Dominion's Eidy Igarashi for the first time in his career.
With Monday's win, Ross improved his singles record to a perfect 5-0 this season. Hamar now stands at 3-1.
Ross and teammate Todd Paul open play in the qualifying doubles bracket on Tuesday. They await the winner of Sam Chang and Jonathan Sucupira of Florida State or Pacific's Arnar Sigurdsson and Jorden Vestli.
