RICHMOND, VA -- Wake Forest senior Kyle Reifers edged sophomore teammate Webb Simpson by one stroke to take first place in the individual race and the Demon Deacons ran away with the team championship at the Mattaponi Springs Collegiate Shootout here Tuesday.

For 8th-ranked Wake Forest, the win in the 54-hole, 14-team tournament was a record-breaking performance.

Reifers became the first Deacon to win individual medalist honors in a tournament since Bill Haas won the 2004 NCAA East Regional. His 14-under par 202 total tied for the fourth-lowest 54-hole score in Wake Forest history and he became just the second player in Deacon history to play an entire tournament in the 60s. Simpson also played the entire tournament in the 60s and his 203 total tied for the fifth-lowest tournament score in WFU history.

Reifers fired a 67-66-69--202 (-14) while Simpson finished in second place, one stroke back, after shooting 65-69-69--203 (-13). Rhys Davis of East Tennessee State finished in third place at 10-under par.

As a team, Wake Forest finished 25-under par with a cumulative 839, tying for the sixth-lowest team score in school history. The Deacons finished 14 strokes in front of Tulsa and Kent State, which tied for second place at 11-under par.

Dating back to last season's NCAA East Regional, Wake Forest has won two of its last four tournaments.

Deacon sophomore Chris McCartin shot a 3-under 69 today to finish tied for 17th place at 1-under for the tournament. Marc Gladson, the only freshman on the Wake Forest roster and playing in this event as an individual, finished tied for 25th with a 1-over 217. Junior Sean Moore finished at 3-over (219) and Chad Wilcox finished at 16-over (232).

Next up for Wake Forest is the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, TN, Oct. 15-16.
