Winston-Salem, N.C. - Playing the entire second half in a horrendous downpour, the Wake Forest men's soccer team defeated Alabama A&M, 4-0, Friday night at Spry Stadium. Freshman Michael Lahoud scored a pair, while Mark Ellington and Steven Curfman both added one.
The win improves the Demon Deacons to 8-3 overall, while the Bulldogs drop to 4-10.
Wake Forest took the lead in the first half with Lahoud's first goal at the 18 minute mark. Jamie Franks, a freshman from Medford, N.J., got the ball at the top right side of the box and made a short pass to Lahoud, who finished it off with a solid shot that the A&M keeper didn't have a chance at.
Wake Forest increased its lead with one minute remaining in the first stanza when heavily argued foul inside the box gave the Deacs a penalty shot. Injecting it past the keeper, Steven Curfman put Wake ahead by two with his first goal of the season.
As the sky opened up in the second half, junior Mark Ellington added one more for the Deacs with a goal that came off his own rebounded shot. Eight minutes later, after two Bulldog injuries took out their goalkeeper and a defender, the Deacs scored again when Ryan Swaim fed Lahoud the ball. Dribbling it into the box, he pulled the keeper out and then slipped it past him for his second of the game.
On the night, the Deacs outshot the Bulldogs, 11-6, with just two shots in the second half. Lahoud led Wake with three shots, while three others followed with two each. Brian Edwards, playing all 90 minutes of the game, was credited with one save and the win, while Andrew Jjobwe played 62:44 for Alabama A&M and recorded two saves.
Wake Forest will return to the field to face Clemson on Oct. 12. Game time in Spry Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
