Charlottesville, Va. - The Wake Forest volleyball team rallied back from a tough first game to win the second, but the Virginia Cavaliers took the final two games and the match, 3-1, Saturday evening in Charlottesville, Va. Sophomore Jackie Lucas led the charge for the Demon Deacons with 12 kills and six blocks.
At the net, the Deacs were strong, with 22 block assists to the Cavaliers 16. In addition to five from Lucas, senior Christy Williams contributed six. Lucas also had the teams only block solo.
In game one it was close between the teams until the 9-8 mark when a five point run pushed Virginia ahead. Unable to catch up, the Cavs took the first, 30-20.
The second game was similar to the first with the two teams keeping it tight. It wasn't until the 11 all mark that a 6-2 run gave the Deacs the lead. Virginia fought back and brought the game within three at 27-24, but a pair of kills by Jenna Doane solidified the win for Wake.
Wake Forest stayed with Virginia until the Cavs took off with an 11-1 run at the 16th point in game three. Three block assists by Williams and four kills by Lucas helped, but the Cavs took the game, 30-20.
In the third, the Cavs opened up with a 12-5 run and Wake couldn't catch them, despite fighting back and bringing the score to 23-17. Closing out the night with a 6-1 run, Virginia took the game, 30-18.
The Demon Deacons fall to 8-8 overall and 1-6 in the ACC. They will next travel to Maryland on Oct. 14. Game time against the Terps is set for 7 p.m.
