Winston-Salem, N.C. - Senior Christy Williams knocked down 21 kills and was one of four Wake Forest players to hit in double-figures, as the Demon Deacons defeated No. 24 Maryland, 3-2 (30-22, 23-30, 30-32, 25-30, 15-11), Saturday night in Reynolds Gym. The win is the first over a ranked opponent this season and improves Wake Forest to 16-10 overall and 9-8 in the ACC.
The Demon Deacons have won eight of their last nine matches and have compiled an 11-1 record at home so far in 2005.
Williams closed the night with the team-high hitting percentage of .556 off 36 attacks, 21 kills and one error. She also added four block assists and one solo stuff. Redshirt-freshman Jessica Furlong earned her fourth straight double-double and seventh of the season with 19 kills and 11 digs. Lauren Peterson and Natalie Mullikin rounded out the players with double-digit kills with 16 each.
In game one, Wake Forest took an early 11-4 lead that included five consecutive points after the score was tied at two all. Continuing to increase the lead at 14-9 with a 10-3 run, the Deacs ran away with the first game, 30-22. In the second, Maryland regrouped and stayed point for point with Wake until taking the lead at the 15 all mark. Closing out with a 10-2 run, the Terps took the second game, 30-23.
Maryland continued to pressure Wake Forest in the third game, despite the Deacs jumping out to a 7-5 lead. With 15 ties and six lead changes, the game was intense with each team receiving a pair of yellow cards. Playing into extra points, the game ended with a kill by Maryland's Mary Beth Brown and a ball handling error on the Deacs.
Game four was close in the beginning, but Wake Forest took a permanent lead at 11-10 with a 12-1 run. Not looking back, the Deacs continued to press ahead and took pushed the match into a fifth game for the eighth time this season.
In the tiebreaker, the score was tied seven times until Wake went on a 5-1 run at 10 all to close the game, 15-11.
On the night, Wake Forest out-hit Maryland, .248 to .230 and had 83 kills to the Terps 73. At the net the Maryland had 14 team blocks, while Wake had 10.
The Demon Deacons will next host Duke, Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.
