WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team will kick off its 2005-06 season Friday night against Mercer at 7 p.m in the Joel Coliseum Annex.
Parking for the game will cost $8, but $5 can be refunded at the ticket window when admission is purchased.
The Demon Deacons played in one exhibition game, a 97-43 victory over Winston-Salem State. In that game, four players scored in double figures, including last year's leading scorer Cotelia Bond-Young. Bond-Young scored the game-high 21 points, while adding three assist and four steals. Freshman Deirdre Naughton was not far behind with 19 points, in addition to adding seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Wake Forest enters the season coming off its first winning season since 1990-91 and its first postseason berth since 1987-88. Welcoming the top recruiting class in the program's history and returning four starters from last season, the Deacs play 26 regular season games with 13 of them at home.
Returning for the Deacs will be two-time All-ACC selection Liz Strunk and 2004 All-ACC selection Bond-Young, the Deacs two leading scorers. Strunk, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., averaged 15.1 points per game and broke the Wake Forest single game scoring record with 40 points against Clemson last year. Bond-Young, a senior from Landover, Md., led the nation in three-pointers made and averaged 15.2 points per game.
Wake Forest welcomes five highly decorated freshman. Alex Tchangoue, Naughton and Yolanda Lavender will all add depth to the perimeter, while Sarah Riddle and Corinne Groves will add height and size to the post.
