Wake Forest Volleyball Falls to Miami, 3-0

MIAMI, Fla. - Redshirt freshman Jessica Furlong was the only Wake Forest player to hit in double figures with 11 kills, as the Demon Deacon volleyball team fell to Miami, 3-0, Wednesday night.
The Demon Deacons, who will close their season Friday night against Florida State, have compiled a 17-13 overall record and a 10-11 mark in the ACC.
On the defensive end against Miami, senior Klarysa Henry led the Deacs with 16 digs, while Natasha Schaefer was not far behind with 11. Natalie Mullikin and Shannan Homan both led Wake Forest at the net with four block assists each, while Lauren Peterson and Erin Borhart each added one solo block.
The Hurricanes took an early 7-3 lead in the first game and the Deacs were left to catch up. After a four point run by Miami at 17-11, Wake Forest called a time out. Coming out of the break, the Deacs won four of the next five points, but Miami answered the run with five straight points which was too much for the Deacs to recover from.
In game two, Wake Forest jumped out to an early 10-6 lead, but Miami knotted the score at 14 all with a four point run. Battling back and forth, Miami eventually took control with five straight points after the score was tied at 16 all. Cruising to the end, Miami won game two, 30-26. In the second game both teams struggled on the attacking end, with the Deacs hitting .018 and the Canes attacking at .093
In similar fashion to game two, the Deacs took the early lead, but the Hurricanes jumped back into it and knotted the score at six all. A 10-2 run by Miami pushed its lead to eight and Wake was unable to regroup and the Hurricanes took the third game, 30-19.
As a team, the Deacs hit .131 to the Hurricanes .250. Defensively, Wake had 53 digs and seven team blocks, while Miami earned 58 digs and 10 blocks. For Miami, two players hit in double figures, including Karla Johnson with 17 kills. At the net, Angelica Ellis put up six of the team's 16 block assists.
Wake Forest will next play Florida State on Friday, Nov. 25 in the final match of the season. The match against the Seminoles is set for 12:00 p.m.
