Wake Forest Volleyball Falls To UNC in Five

Chapel Hill, N.C. - Jessica Furlong earned her third double-double in as many matches and the Demon Deacons had four players in double figure digs, but the Wake Forest volleyball team fell to North Carolina in five games (30-28, 22-30, 30-28, 19-30, 12-15), Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Demon Deacons, who had three players in double figures in kills, were led by Furlong with 21. Natalie Mullikin added 18 and earned the match high .387 attack percentage. Defensively, the Deacs were led by Klarysa Henry who earned a career high 22 digs. Furlong rounded out her double-double with 19 digs, while senior Erin Borhart also had 19.
Wake Forest held the lead for the beginning of game one, but Carolina took a one point lead at 19-18. Keeping the score close, the Heels tied it up at 28 all, but a kill by senior Christy Williams and then an attack error by Carolina sealed the first game for the Deacs, 30-28.
The Tar Heels struck back in game two, and held a five point lead at 18-13. Fighting back, the Deacs took five straight points and tied it up. Unfortunately, UNC won 12 of the final 16 points and took the second game, 30-22.
Game three was the tightest of the match, with 11 ties and 11 lead changes. It wasn't until three straight points by Wake at the 26 all mark that the Deacs took the lead. Allowing two more points by the Heels, a kill by Mullikin ended the game, 30-28.
In the fourth game, the Deacs had trouble on the attack, knocking down just eight kills throughout the game. Jumping out to an 11-6 lead, the Heels followed it up with an 11-2 run that increased their lead. Unable to recover from the large deficit, the match was pushed into a fifth game.
In the final game, the Heels jumped out to an early lead, but the Deacs won five straight points and brought it within one. Keeping it within a point, it wasn't until three straight by UNC at 13-10 that gave them the match.
On the day, the Deacs hit .164, while the the Heels hit .241. Defensively, Wake Forest had 90 digs and nine team blocks, while North Carolina finished with 98 digs and 10 team blocks.
Wake Forest will return home Nov. 11 and 12 to host Boston College and Maryland, respectively.
