BLACKSBURG, Va. - Porsche' Jones and Cotelia Bond-Young both put up a game-high 21 points, but the Demon Deacons could not overcome a large second-half run and fell to Atlantic Coast Conference newcomers Virginia Tech, 74-64, Monday night in Cassell Coliseum. With the loss, the Deacs fall to 13-7 overall and 2-5 in the ACC, while the Hokies improve to 13-6 and 3-4 in the conference.
Wake led the majority of the first half, but a 19-1 run by Virginia Tech in the beginning of the second half pushed the Hokies out to a lead that the Demon Deacons could not recover from.
In addition to her 21 points, Jones led the team with seven assists and five steals, while Bond-Young added three assists. Senior Erin Ferrell led the Deacs on the boards, pulling down nine, while Jennifer Johnson added eight.
In the first half, Wake jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead with a trio of three-pointers, but the Hokies were able jump back into it and take the lead at 12-9 with an eight point run. A steal by Jones helped Wake regain it and a bucket by Ferrell increased the distance between the teams to six. The Deacs were able to hold on to the lead until a 13-2 run by Virginia Tech tied the score up at 29 each with a little over three minutes remaining. Trading points for the final minutes, the Hokies went into the break with a one point lead.
In the second half, things were a bit different. Freshman Christen Brown sunk the first four points for Wake, but unfortunately it was followed by a 19-1 run that pushed Virginia Tech out to a 56-39 lead. Finally breaking the streak at 10:55, Bond-Young hit a pair in the paint and then one from beyond the arc and decreased the Hokie lead to 10. A stop and another three by Bond-Young helped to chip away at the lead, but the Deacs were unable to dip below the 10 point mark.
Wake Forest scored nine fast break points on the night to the Hokies six, but the 22 bench points to Wake's none hurt the team. Despite Virginia Tech outshooting the Deacs 49.2 percent to 35.8 percent, Wake did outrebound the conference newcomers, 35 to 34.
Five player from Virginia Tech scored in double-figures, including Carrie Mason with 13 and Megan Finnerty and Dawn Chriss both with 12.
Closing a two-game road swing tonight, the Deacs will take a mid-week break and return to the Joel Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 3, against Georgia Tech. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
