College Park, Md. - Liz Strunk and Porsche Jones each scored 18, and Erin Ferrell had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Demon Deacons (13-9, 2-7), but it wasn't enough as the Maryland Terrapins defeated the Wake Forest women's basketball team 76-67, Thursday night at the Comcast Center.
Strunk also added three assists and two steals, in addition to five rebounds. Senior Jennifer Johnson made her first career start against the Terps, scoring seven points and two boards in 31 minutes of action.
Wake opened the game staying close with the Terps and even taking the lead at 8-6, but a eight point run gave Maryland a lead that the Deacs could not overcome. Two straight jumpers by Shay Doran at 21-33 pushed the Terrapins ahead and a three pointer by Cotelia Bond-Young at the buzzer put the Deacs in the locker room trailing by nine.
In the second half, Wake remained scoreless for four minutes and a six point run pushed the difference to 15. Wake was able to jump back into the game with an eight straight points, but Maryland answered it with a 10 points of their own. With just over nine minutes remaining, the Deacs continued to try to catch the Terps, but they were unable and Maryland took the game, 76-67.
For the first time this year, the Deacs managed to hit 10-for-10 from the line, upping their season free throw percentage to .762. From the field, Wake shot 37.3 percent and pulled down 36 boards to the Terps 42.
Wake Forest will return to the court on Sunday afternoon to host Florida State.
