Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams competed at the Clemson Classic on Saturday. Junior Brad Wharton shattered Clemson's indoor record in the mile run. Eight other Deacon athletes and three other ACC teams competed on the Clemson Indoor Track during the final weekend of February.

"I'm proud of the effort of our athletes today," said director of track and field Annie Bennett. "It's extremely tough emotionally after an ACC championship meet to go out and earn good times. I thought Brad, Chris and our hurdlers did a tremendous job."

Freshman Melissa Council earned a seventh place finish in the 200 meter dash with her 25.50 performance. The Cary, NC native also competed in the 55 meter hurdles, running an 8.69 next-round qualifying mark during the preliminaries and an 8.69 in the finals, good for a sixth place finish.

Michelle Duffey placed fourth in the 800 meter run, after a 2:19.33. The time was her second best mark of the season.

Eric Seely finished second in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 49.07. He was also a member of the men's 4x400 meter relay that claimed a third place 3:21.73 finish. Joining Seely on the relay team were Michael Bingham, Mike Loyd and Willie Idlette.

Loyd qualified out of the preliminary 55 meter hurdles with a 7.54, tying his second best time this season. He recorded a personal best in the finals of the event, with a 7.41, good for a sixth place finish overall. Bingham also qualified in the 55 meter hurdles with a personal best 7.59 and ran a 7.86 in the finals for a 10th place finish.

Bingham qualified for the finals of the long jump, with a preliminary mark of 21-08.00. The freshman from Burlington, NC finished fourth in the finals with a 21-08.75.

Jesse Richert recorded a high jump mark of 6-02.75, good for a fourth place finish.

Chris Catton offered the best 800 meter performance by a Deacon this season, 1:54.03, earning him a second place finish, less than one second off the race winner and a full two seconds ahead of his closest competitor.

Brad Wharton shattered Clemson's indoor record in the mile run with a 4:07.81. The record, previously set in 2004 by Florida States' Ian Hornabrook, stood at 4:11.27. Wharton's personal best and best by any Deacon this season, fell just short of a first place finish as Itay Magidi of Clemson claimed the title with his NCAA provisionally qualifying mark of 4:05.30.

The Deacons will compete at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind. next weekend, followed by the NCAA Indoor Championship March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Ark.
