WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- - Porsche' Jones led the way with a career and game high 29 points and four others hit double figures as the Wake Forest women's basketball team defeated Charlotte, 100-75, in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament, Friday night in Joel Coliseum.
Senior Erin Ferrell was one of the five to hit double figures with 18 and earned her ninth double-double of the season by adding 12 rebounds. She also hit her 1,000th career point, becoming the 14th Demon Deacon to do so and second this season. Cotelia Bond-Young, who had 22 points tonight, hit the 1,000 career point mark against Virginia earlier in this year.
The Demon Deacons kept it close in the first half, but pulled ahead in the second, improving their overall record to 16-14, while the 49ers drop to 22-9. This is the first time since the 1989-90 season that the women's program has earned 16 victories and the first time since 1995 that Wake Forest has put up 100 points in a game.
Wake Forest started out a little slow in the beginning, letting Charlotte jump out to an early lead, but a 7-0 run led by Jennifer Johnson gave the Deacs their first lead at 15-13. Keeping the game within no more than five, the two teams battled for control and traded the lead nine times, until the one minute mark when Wake was able to grab the lead permanently with a free throw by Ferrell. Not only did the point give the Deacs their largest lead of the half, it also marked her 1,000th career point.
During the second half, the 49ers opened play with a five point run that immediately knotted the scored, but a pair of three pointers by Bond-Young and another by Liz Strunk pushed Wake ahead by 10. Holding on to the lead, the Demon Deacons continued to forge ahead, hitting eight of their 13 three pointers during the stanza.
On the night, Johnson also earned a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Strunk rounded out the double digits with 13 points.
For the 49ers, Sakellie Daniels earned 26 points, while Sabrina Gergory and Whitney Hoey also both earned double digits with 15 and 10, respectively. As a team, Charlotte shot 39.7 percent from the floor and sunk 27 points from off the bench.
The Deacs appearance in the WNIT is the first post season action that the program has seen since the 1988 season when Wake Forest made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament under then-head coach Joe Sanchez.
Wake Forest will now face South Florida in the second round of the WNIT, Monday night at Joel Coliseum. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
