WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Wake Forest scored in each of the first six innings and pounded out a season-high 15 hits in a 15-8 pasting of Virginia in ACC baseball action from Hooks Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Demon Deacons have now captured each of the first two games of the series and will look to avenge last season's sweep in Charlottesville with a sweep of their own on Sunday afternoon.
For the second straight day, Wake Forest (7-7, 2-0 ACC) jumped all over the Cavaliers' (8-5, 0-2 ACC) starting pitcher. The Deacs scored four runs in the first, three in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth to race out to a 12-0 lead.
The 12-run cushion was more than enough for Wake Forest starter Josh Ellis. Ellis (2-1) not only held the Cavaliers scoreless over the first six innings, but did not surrender a hit until the top of the fifth inning. The right-handed hurler worked into the eighth inning before tiring. Ellis went a season-high 7.1 innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits. He struckout only one and walked three, but forced four double play ground outs.
Freshman Andy Goff got the Deacs going with his bases loaded, three-run double in the top of the first inning. Goff went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI. Sophomore Matt Antonelli continued to excel in the leadoff spot. The third basemen was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and five runs scored. Antonelli's five runs scored are a career-high and the most for the Deacs since senior Ben Ingold scored five times on March 1, 2004 against High Point.
Ingold, senior Ryder Mathias, redshirt sophomore Brendan Enick and senior Matt Miller all had two hits on the afternoon. Ingold went 2-for-6 with a run scored, while Mathias went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Mathias also walked twice.
Enick continued his hit barrage. The designated hitter went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Enick extended his consecutive hit streak to a career-best seven games. Miller had his second straight multiple hit game. After homering twice in the series opener, Miller went 2-for-4 with a couple runs scored and an RBI.
Freshman Brett Linnenkohl went 1-for-4 and scored two runs. Senior catcher J.B. Tucker did not pick up a hit which snapped his hit streak at a career-high 12 games.
Virginia starter Matt Avery (2-2) went only 1.1 innings and allowed seven earned runs on five hits. Avery also walked four. Similar to Friday's starter Mike Ballard, Avery had allowed just three earned runs in 19.2 innings entering this weekend, but was knocked around by Wake Forest. A quartet of Virginia pitchers followed and were equally unsuccessful. Scott Morgenthaler, Michael Schwimer, Ryan Ouellette and Pat McAnaney were touched up for eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits over the final 6.2 innings.
The Deacs have now scored 26 runs in the first two games of the series with the Cavaliers.
The Demon Deacons return to action with the third and final game of the three-game set Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Wake Forest will look for its first ACC series sweep since March 14-16, 2003 at Maryland. Freshman Matt Hammond will take the mound for the Deacs, while the Cavaliers will counter with Jeff Kamrath.
