The Duke women's golf team leads the eight team field at the 2005 ACC Championship. The Blue Devils carded a 303 for round one to hold off the Deacons, who stand in second with a first day 312. Wake's Mandy Goins stands alone in first place with her one-over 73 on Friday at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C.
Defending ACC Individual Champion Brittany Lang finished three over and is in third place overall. The 2004 ACC and National Player of the year Liz Janangelo is tied for fourth after a first round 76. Anna Grzebien led the Blue Devils with first round 74.
Wake Forest, the tournament runner-up eight of the last nine years, stands in second place after round one, with a team score of 312. Mandy Goins paced the Deacons with the tournament best one-over 73. Senior Christine Hallstrom is second on the team, with a six-over 78, while Ashley Hoagland, playing in her first tournament since returning from a back injury, carded an eight-over 80 and is tied for 12th place.
ACC newcomer Miami ended day one finished third, with a team score of 319. The winners in three of four tournaments this spring, the Hurricanes were paced Friday by Hagen Weintraub, who finished with a five-over 77 in round one. Tina Miller offered a score of 78 for Miami.
Virginia stands just behind Miami in fourth place, with a combined 320. North Carolina State finished with a first round 323 for fifth place. North Carolina (326), Florida State (329) and Maryland (337) round out the field of eight.
