Charlotte, NC - The No.1-ranked Duke Blue Devils captured their tenth straight Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Golf Championship Sunday at the Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. Duke's Brittany Lang claimed her second individual championship in as many years, while Duke's Anna Grzebien and Liz Janangelo finished second and third, respectively. Duke's Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh and Miami's Tina Miller finished tied for fourth.
After a third round four-over 292 performance, the Blue Devils finished with an 886, a 47 point margin of victory, a new conference championship record. Brittany Lang finished two under for the day, the best score by anyone all weekend. She becomes just the second golfer to repeat as the women's conference champion.
Head Coach Dan Brown led the Blue Devils to a tenth consecutive title, the longest current streak in the conference of any sport, and captured his 12th conference title at the helm of the women's program. He owns more conference championships than any other coach of any sport in Duke's history.
The Deacons finished second with a combined 933 for the tournament. It's the Deacons ninth runner-up finish in the last ten years. The Deacons are the last team to have beaten Duke in the ACC Championship (1995). Wake Forest finished the 2005 tournament with three girls in the top-20, including Mandy Goins, who tied for seventh-place after rounds of 73, 81 and 74. It was the best finish of her career.
The team from Charlottesville, in just their second year as a golf team, improved from a 2004 seventh place finish to a tied for third place finish in 2005. The Cavaliers pulled within one stroke of second place Wake Forest early in the third round, but finished 11 shots behind the Deacons, with a tournament 944.
The Wolfpack, led by Ashlee Dean's tournament 230, tied for third, with a combined 944. Nancy Mountcastle joined Dean in the top-20, with her tournament 234 and tied for 13th place finish. Dean birdied the last hole to pull the Pack into a tie.
Miami and Florida State, neck and neck throughout the tournament, finished fifth and sixth respectively. In their first year as members of the ACC, the Hurricanes combined for a team tournament score of 946. The Seminoles placed two women in the top half of the field, including Jaclyn Burch whose third round 74 improved her standing to tied for 10th overall.
Ann Laney, sixth overall, led North Carolina to a seventh place finish. The Tar Heels shot their best round of the tournament in the final round (310), despite playing with only four players. Maryland finished eighth overall, led by Jessica Reno's tournament 243.
