Tallahassee, Fla. - The Wake Forest men's and women's track teams began the second day of competition at the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference championship on Friday, before weather delayed the events indefinitely. The women stand in fifth overall after the first 48-hours of action at the Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Fla.
Brad Wharton and Brian Smith qualified for the 1500 meter finals on Saturday, with times of 3:54.73 and 3:53.27, respectively. It was a personal best for Smith in the event. Mike Loyd advanced to the finals in the 110 meter hurdles with his 14.57, seventh place finish on Saturday.
Jesse Richert earned two points for the Deacon men with his seventh place finish in the high jump. He jumped 6-06.75 and became just the second Deacon on the men's team to contribute points this weekend.
Michael Bingham won the 110 meter hurdles in the sixth event of the decathlon. His time of 14.66 was a personal best and earned him 891 points. His fifth place finish in the discus earned him 554 points and kept him in the lead through seven events, before a lightning advisory halted competition.
Mike Piscetelli stood in ninth place in the decathlon after seven events, helped by a third place finish in the discus throw.
Melissa Council stood in sixth place and Molly Kennedy in seventh before the women's heptathlon was also delayed due to the weather. Council finished fourth in the long jump with a 17-11.00, while Kennedy jumped for 16-06.50.
Despite running a 55.48 and crushing a personal best in the 400 meter dash, Diane Anderson fell just shy of advancing to the finals of that event. Catherine Muehleib also scored a personal best, with her 42-02.75 shot put throw.
Lindsay Neuberger finished third overall in the shot put. Her 48-09.50 earned the Deacon women six points and handed the Virginia Beach, Va., native All-ACC honors for the second straight year in the event.
Cassy Richards placed seventh in the long jump, with a 19-04.00 leap. She earned Wake Forest two points for her efforts.
Competition will resume later this evening, weather permitting. Stay tuned to www.WakeForestSports.com for further updates.
