WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team honored three seniors, Meredith Bell, Erin Ferrell and Jennifer Johnson and their contributions to the program, Sunday afternoon at the annual awards banquet. The trio helped lead the team to one of the best season in the program's history, including the first winning season in 14 years and the first post season appearance in 17.

First year head coach Mike Petersen and his staff also handed out the annual team awards at the banquet, including the Iron Deac award, the Stacy Cox Coach's award and the Hustle Award.

Ferrell was honored with the Hustle Award, a new accolade given by the coaching staff that recognizes the overall player. Determined over the course of the season, the Hustle Award differs from traditional awards, as the winner is the player that leads the team the most in seven different categories throughout the season. The categories include assists, steals, deflections, 50/50 balls, charges, rebounds and screens.

Johnson, a native of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., closed her senior year averaging a career-high 6.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game and was honored with the Iron Deac Award. Receiving the honor for her dedication and work ethic in the weight room, Johnson earned the award for the second year in a row. Johnson was also honored by Jane Caldwell, the academic advisor for women's basketball with the academic recognition award for her excellence in the classroom. Ferrell, who received a 4.0 grade point average in the fall, was also honored with the academic recognition award.

Barbara Trautwein, the Wake Forest pep band director for the past 20 years, was presented with the Stacy Cox Coach's award for her outstanding support and dedication to the team. The award is named for Cox, a former Wake Forest assistant coach who passed away in an automobile accident in 1999.

The Demon Deacons closed out the season with a 17-15 overall record and the first post season berth in the Women's National Invitational Tournament.
