WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Brian Fleishman, head women's tennis coach at Wake Forest the last six seasons, has resigned from his position, Demon Deacon athletic director Ron Wellman confirmed today.
Fleishman will complete his duties next week when Wake Forest sends two singles and one doubles team to the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga.
Fleishman has been at Wake Forest since 1997. He was an assistant coach from 1997 to 1999 and then was promoted to head coach in 2000. A 1991 Christopher-Newport graduate, Fleishman compiled a record of 111-74 overall and 37-21 in the ACC in six seasons.
Wake Forest advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times under Fleishman, peaking in 2002 by advancing to the final eight. In 2005, Wake Forest finished 14-11 overall and 5-5 in the ACC and was ranked as high as 25th.
Under Fleishman, Wake Forest produced seven All-Americans in women's tennis. In 2002, WFU's Bea Bielik won the NCAA singles championship, helping Fleishman win ITA National Coach of the Year honors. He was the ACC Coach of the Year in 2000 and earned the PTR Coach Verdieck Award for College Coaching in 2003.
A national search for Fleishman's replacement will begin immediately.
