The #28 Wake Forest women's tennis team will travel to Lexington, Ky., to face #40 Indiana in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament, Friday May 13 at 10 a.m. If the Demon Deacons win, they will advance to the second round to face the winner of the Kentucky/Marshall match.
Earlier in the year, the Demon Deacons met the Hoosiers in the fifth match of the season and lost, 6-1. Sophomore Alex Hirsch took home the only singles victory for Wake Forest, while the doubles pair of Karin Coetzee and Danielle Schwartz earned a victory in doubles.
Making their 11th overall appearance in the tournament, the Demon Deacons closed the 2005 regular season with a 13-10 record, including a 5-5 mark in the ACC. Advancing to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament with a 4-0 victory over Virginia Tech in the first round, the Demon Deacons have remained in the national rankings for the entire spring season.
In singles, the Deacs are led by Coetzee, who is currently ranked #33 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Carrying a 22-10 overall record, Coetzee has not dropped out of the national ranking since her sophomore year and is also ranked in doubles. Pairing up with Hirsch, the duo sits at the #16 spot with a 12-3 overall record and will play for the Deacs in the #1 position.
Indiana enters the tournament coming off a 4-2 loss to Michigan in the quarterfinals of the Big 10 tournament. Closing the regular season with a 14-11 overall record, the Hoosiers will be making their 22nd tournament appearance.
