Reifers fired four birdies and never had less than a two-shot lead on a hot, muggy, 90 degree afternoon. His four-day total of 268 ties the tournament record shared by John Cook (1979 champ) and Luke Donald (2000). He also becomes the fourth Wake Forest star to win the Northeast crown, joining Bob Bynum (1976), Scott Hoch (1977) and Jay Sigel (1984,1985,1991).
This year's field included nine of the top 10 and 17 of the top 20 amateurs on the Golf Week/Titleist rankings. Seventeen players finished at even par or better, by far the most in history. Sim, an Australian who won both the Sunnehanna and Monroe Invitationals earlier in June, cut Reifers' lead to two shots with a birdie on the par-3 12th hole, but Reifers drove the green at the par-4 14th hole and made birdie to extend his lead to three shots. A Reifers bogey at the 15th hole cut the lead back to two shots but Reifers made pars at the last three holes to preserve the win.
Reifers becomes only the third player in tournament history to shoot par-69 or better in all four rounds.
