Birmingham, Ala. - Rising Wake Forest sophomore Webb Simpson, winner of the 99th Southern Amateur, has been named National Amateur of the Month for July by the Southern Golf Association.
Simpson won the prestigious Southern Am at the daunting Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach, SC, his 3-under-par total of 277 besting a field that included the No. 1 ranked amateur and four Walker Cuppers.
Simpson, ACC Freshman Golfer of the Year, continued his stellar play a week later by taking medalist honors at a U.S. Amateur regional qualifier with a 68-63 performance.
His victory at the Dunes earned him a berth in next year's milestone 100th Southern Amateur in Birmingham and an invitation to play in Arnold Palmer's PGA Tour Bay Hill Invitational next March.
The monthly award is chosen by the SGA's 12-man selection panel of national golf officials, journalists and college coaches. Earlier winners of the award this year have included Ryan Blaum, Aaron Price , Rhys Davies and Michael Sim.
