Arlington, Texas - The Wake Forest women's volleyball team picked up its third consecutive victory with a 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-26) win over Iowa, to claim the crown of the University of Texas-Arlington Invitational Saturday evening.
"I am thrilled with the teams performance tonight," said head coach Heather Kahl. "Our outsides stepped up to the challenge and played very well. Overall, we improved each game and this tournament was good preparation for the upcoming ACC season."
Senior Erin Borhart earned her first triple-double of the season with 11 kills, 33 assists and 16 digs, while junior Lauren Peterson stepped it up on the attack, hitting a match-high .538 on 15 kills, 26 total attacks and just one error. Defensively, senior Klarysa Henry had 11 digs and Jenna Doane finished the night with six.
In the first game, the Demon Deacons dominated on the attack, hitting a season-high. 567. Peterson and Borhart both had five kills, while Doane helped out at the net with three blocks. In the second game, the two teams played evenly with the lead changing five times. Wake eventually took control of the game at 10 all with a 6-0 run that left the Hawkeyes trying to catch up. Iowa did bring it within two at 29-27, but Wake finished the game off before it was too late.
In the third game, Wake Forest again dominated on the attack, with senior Christy Williams leading the way with four kills on seven attacks for a .571 hitting percentage. On the defensive end, the 23 digs set up the offensive to help close the final game, 30-26.
With the win, the Demon Deacons improve to 4-2 overall going into the Wake Forest Invitational next weekend. At the tournament, the Deacs will host Georgetown, South Dakota State and Morehead State, Sept. 16-17 in Reynolds Gym.
