CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Wake Forest senior All-American Justin Moose assisted on four first-half goals as the 16th-ranked Demon Deacon men's soccer team routed Rutgers, 5-1, in men's college soccer action from the Carolina Nike Classic Sunday afternoon. Moose not only set a new school record for assists in a single-game, but the four assists moved Moose into first place on the career assist list as well.
Moose, a Hermann Trophy candidate, raised his season total to a team-best five assists. The Statesville, N.C. native now has 25 assists over his splendid career. With his performance Sunday afternoon, Moose vaulted past Scott Sealy (22), Vicente Bastidas (23), Mark Erwin (24) and Kyle Bachmeier (24).
Junior Ryan Solle had quite an afternoon of his own. The midfielder assisted on three of the Demon Deacons' five goals which would have tied the previous single-game school record. The Deacs went 2-0 for the weekend and captured the tournament title on goal differential. Wake Forest outscored its two opponents, South Carolina and Rutgers, 8-1.
For the second straight game, the Demon Deacons (3-1-0) wasted little time in grabbing an early lead. In Friday night's 3-0 victory over South Carolina, Wake Forest scored their first goal just eight minutes into the match. On Sunday, they struck even sooner. Junior Mark Ellington put the Demon Deacons up 1-0 at 6:23 of the first-half. The forward broke free behind the Scarlet Knight defense and slotted home his second goal of the season. Moose and freshman Michael Lahoud combined for a beautiful give-and-go just outside the Rutgers penalty area to free up Ellington.
Ellington pushed the lead to 2-0 with his second goal of the match and third of the season at 21:02. This time, Moose and junior Wells Thompson penetrated the Rutgers back line. Moose played an attacking ball into the Scarlet Knights penalty area where Thompson slotted the ball across the goalmouth to Ellington who placed a shot into the lower left corner.
Wake Forest then put the game away with two goals over a 39-second span. Once again, Moose was instrumental in the goals. The senior teamed up with Solle setting up both goals -- each the career first goals for freshmen Jamie Franks and Andrew Wright. The goals came at 42:52 and 43:31 of the first-half.
Rutgers (1-3-0) did score early in the second-half to narrow the deficit to 4-1. The goal was the first allowed by the Demon Deacons since their season opening loss to Indiana. The Deacs had not allowed a score in a span of 241:45.
Wake Forest padded its lead to 5-1 with a goal from Thompson in the 73rd minute. Solle picked up the assist.
Wake Forest will open ACC action next Sunday night at Duke. Kickoff at Koskinen Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
